The fertility factor joins with the bacterial chromosome in a manner similar to the union of viral DNA with bacterial DNA in prophage formation. When the link is established, a cross-bridge forms between the two bacteria and as the Hfr chromosome replicates, a portion of the chromosome is transferred into the F- bacterium.
